The book starts off describing a Spanish man, José, looking for sardines off the coast of Huelva, Spain. This is taking place in 1943 during World War II. José is a regular spotter who tells other fisherman where the fish are. José is a non-educated 23 year old who was born on the beach. Today was a bad day to spot for sardines. José had found a body with a yellow life jacket while he was searching for sardines. José dragged the body to Playa de la Bota where everybody gathered around the stench of the rotting corpse. The body was examined closer by the children. The bystanders found him in a khaki tunic and a trench coat along with large army boots. There was a silver chain with a cross around his neck. This was a huge mystery to the villagers since Spain was not in World War II by 1943. "On the part of the beach called La Bota-the boot- José and Pepe dragged the body up to the dunes."

Describing the Setting of the Novel
I started reading Operation Mincemeat instead of The Secret Rescue because I could not find the book at the Mason Public Library. So I found this book in the same section as The Secret Rescue (940.547) which is the World War II area.

How did his silver chain manage to stay on his neck if he was floating in the ocean
ReplyDeleteThis body was a dummy sent to sea by the British to trick the German's. The British attached a message saying that the Allies were going to attack Greece and Sardinia when they were actually going to attack Sicily.
DeleteDid they ever solve the mystery of who the person was and way they where in the ocean.
ReplyDeleteThe person was a dummy sent to sea but I have not read that far to see how the British planned Operation Mincemeat out.
DeleteThis sounds like a cool book. Did you read it because of your passion for airplanes? That is what I did first trimester. I found a baseball book wrote my blogs on that.
ReplyDeleteI am reading this book because I could not find the book I wanted to read. This book is related to WWII so I chose this book.
DeleteGreat job Jurian! I can feel how you love the airplane!
ReplyDeleteThanks Satoshi!
DeleteThis book sounds very interesting, I have a feeling that you are going to enjoy it, especially because of the airplane. It seems like that book makes the reader ask a lot of questions which is a good writing strategy. I have been trying to incorporate that strategy into my own writing for a long time and I just cant quite get it right, Oh well, enjoy your book!!!
ReplyDeleteActually Sam, this book is not related to airplanes. Thanks! I will enjoy my book.
DeleteWow! I can tell that you love airplanes not just through this post, but from the whole blog itself. I like how you connect all of your posts with one common theme: airplanes/aviation. From the post itself, I can tell that this book seems really interesting. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteThanks Aditya!
